For the Fallen – Poppy Cascade at St Peter’s Church, Hayling Island

Throughout October and November, St Peter’s Church in North Hayling hosted the Poppy Cascade along with an exhibition of life on Hayling Island during WW1. The Northney Textiles Craft Group and St Peter’s Church worked together to create the poppy cascade, which featured over 18,000 handmade poppies. The cascade was made to honour the brave service men and women on the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1.

Alyson Griffin, who is a Poppy Cascade Committee Member and Northney Textiles Craft Group Member, founded the Poppy Cascade project in 2017 having seen a display of poppies at a church in Scotland last November. She was interested in family history and found her grandfather and great uncle were in WW1, and so she dedicated the final poppies on the embroidery she had sewed of the poem "For The Fallen".

The poppy cascade was on display from the Dedication Service on 7 October 2018 to 11 November 2018 when an evening service was held as a poppy finale. Hundreds of of visitors came to see the poppy cascade to pay tribute to those involved in the conflicts of war, as well as appreciating the time and effort taken by The Northney Textiles Craft Group and St Peter’s Church.

It was a fitting tribute to for all the 800,00 who died for our freedom in WW1 and for all those who have given their lives since in combat.

On Sunday 11th November, a Remembrance Parade and Service also took place on Hayling Island. The Mayor was represented by past mayor, Cllr Leah Turner, who lay a wreath at the memorial. The march then started from Hollow Lane car park at 10:30am and finished at the cenotaph, St Mary’s Church, where the service and wreath laying took place.
