Volunteers come together to transform garden space over six day project

A selfless man has brought new life to a garden area which was over grown and miserable.

Patients at the rehabilitation centre based at Petersfield Community Hospital will now enjoy beautiful raised flower beds and a space to relax thanks to Steve Holland.

The hospital were desperate to do something with the area which was overgrown with brambles.

And now those staying at the rehabilitation centre are pleased with the work that was completed on 2nd September.

Steve Holland, landscaping manager at Wyevale Garden Centre in Liss, says it was a great experience to help.

He said: “The hospital contacted me to support them by providing the raised beds in the gardens outside Cedar Ward.

“I called on many of my suppliers and they all got involved and provided the materials free of charge.

“The patch of grass which was over grown with brambles didn’t look very nice but now it has been totally transformed.”

Steve was supported by numerous businesses including Jimmy Keet at Sweet Lily Landscapes, founded in 2014.

Sweet Lily Landscapes believe a beautiful landscape should work in harmony with the local environment. With that in mind they had supported this cause.

The work would have totalled about £25,000 but didn’t cost the centre anything thanks to the generosity of the community and local businesses.

An official opening ceremony thanked all the volunteers for their work on the project.

It took six days to complete the space.

Mr Holland added: “There were so many people smiling about what has been done.

“Many of the ladies were asking for pictures. There was such a strong sense of gratitude.

“I would do this again. It is so humbling to see so many smiles on peoples’ faces.”

Hard work and head aches were a part of making this project a success, says Steve. The space is now accessible for wheelchair users.

Steve has no immediate plans to oversee anything similar to what has happened but is always open and enthusiastic to support the community.

The rehabilitation centre is for patients who are recovering from illness or injuries. It accommodates those who need support and may be back on track to recovery.
