Food To Dine For - Charles Street Tap (Review)
As soon as you step foot inside the Charles Street Tap, you know it’s something special. Located in the idyllic historic market town of Petersfield, this bar seems to be refreshingly urban without seeming out of place in Petersfield – it provides a perfect contrast to its surroundings.
Opened in the summer of last year, the Charles Street Tap seems to have gone from strength to strength every time I have visited, always welcoming me with a new deal or new item on the menu, never failing to surprise or impress.
Normally I would choose a fantastic craft beer from the huge selection they have on offer – the Kirin Ichiban is a particular favourite of mine - but in my most recent visit I decided to try one of the delicious looking cocktails as I sat in the perfect little sun-trap of a courtyard. I picked a classic – a cosmopolitan – and watched in anticipation as the skilled barman set about making it for me. I must say I am not normally a fan of cocktails in general as I find they can be a tad too sweet for my tastes, but this one was marvellous. A perfect blend of fruitiness, with just the right amount of sour to balance out the sweet… it was a dream to sit and sip in the summer sun.
Forever a sucker for fried chicken, I chose to order the Buttermilk Fried Cajun Chicken with grilled corn, slaw and fries. The chicken was described as being marinated for 3 days, and you could really taste the depth of flavour that comes with that. A beautiful dish despite being fairly simple, I couldn’t have enjoyed it more! My friend decided to order the House Ribs with roasted sweet potatoes and fresh slaw, after being recommended it by various people - and they for sure did not disappoint. He was thrilled with the intense BBQ flavour they possessed, without just being covered in soggy sauce – a mistake so many establishments make! We both fell in love with the fresh slaw that accompanied our meals, a delicious twist on the classic coleslaw that tastes fresher than the original.
The atmosphere and staff were friendly throughout the whole evening, providing the cherry on top of what was already a fantastic bar. I particularly love the décor, perhaps because it strikes me as being so different to everything else in Petersfield. The modern interior and slightly industrial feel make you feel like you are in an edgy and independent London bar… perhaps in somewhere like Soho… without you having to travel an hour to get there!
